States such as California and Oregon, in an effort to spur domestic markets for recycled plastics, have enacted Rigid Plastic Container laws that require manufacturers to utilize increasing amounts of recycled materials.
California’s Rigid Plastic Packaging Containers (RPPCs) Law requires that unless industry meets a 25% recycling rate, all RPPCs must meet one of three criteria:
- Contain 25% post consumer recycled material
- Have a recycling rate of 45%
- Be source reduced by 10%
- Be refillable or reusable
The definition of what constitutes an RPC may vary, yet the consensus is that proposed amendments will include broader definitions and be more inclusive of thermoformed clamshells and blisters. Examples:
